Sri Radha Gopinath Mandir

It is said that Vajranabha, Krishna's great-grandson, had carved three Deities of Krishna. He never saw Krishna, so the Deities were carved according to the description given by Uttara, the mother of Maharaja Parikshit. He had three different Deities carved, but none of them were perfect. Govindaji resembled Krishna's lotus face (Mukharavinda), Sri Madana-Mohan resembled Krishna from the lotus like navel down to the lotus feet, and Sri Gopinath resembled Krishna from the lotus like navel to the neck. Padma Purana quotes that to get the full vision of Sri Krishna, pilgrims have to visit and offer obeisances to all the three Deities during a single day, while the sun is still up. Sri Govinda and Sri Gopinath are now in Jaipur, and Madana-Mohan is in Karoli, a small town in Rajasthan and this triple darshan seems to be possible even today, if you are an efficient traveler, of course.

Sri Sri Radha-Gopinath are the Deities worshiped by Srila Madhu Pandit Gosvami and discovered at Vamshivata in Vrindavan by Paramananda Bhattacharya, the disciple of Gadadhar Pandit. Vajranabha originally installed Gopinath in Vrindavan. This Deity was brought to Jaipur from Vrindavan when the Muslims raided Vrindavan. This temple was also desecrated by Aurangzeb in 1670 and new one was built next to it where pratibhu-murti is worshipped today. Madhu Pandit Goswami was a disciple of Gadadhar Pandit. He established the temple of Gopinath in Vrindavan and lived here until his sacred body was entombed here near the original main gate of the Gopinath temple.

Sri Jahnava Devi, wife of Sri Nityananda Prabhu, served Gopinath with unflinching faith and devotion. Being pleased by her service, Srimati Radharani offered her place to Sri Jahnava Devi. Even today in this temple Srimati Radharani stands on the right side of Gopinath and Srimati Jahnava Devi stands on the left side of Gopinath. There are also Deities of Srimati Lalita and Srimati Vishakha on the altar.

In the old temple of Gopinath are the Deities of Sri Sri Radha Krishna-chandra, Sri Sri Radha Vrindavana-chandra and Sri Vamshidhari Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This is the only temple which houses the Deity of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu with two arms holding flute. Devotees do not know the pastime of These Deities. However some say that They were brought to the temple during the attack of Aurangazeb.
